Passion … or Heartburn?

In the Coaching for College Program, the kids had an cultural event to expose them to various cultures. This celebration, focused on Latin American and Asian cultures, included a program that included various musicians explaining and demonstrating various music styles and instruments characteristic of their cultures. This included a musician from Cuba and one from China. They even allowed the kids to play their instruments.
There were other activities as well including carrying baskets on one’s head and Chinese writing. The kids all had fun trying to walk with baskets on their heads. The tutors were allowed to partake in the festivities as well. After showing my PowerPoint presentation made up of pictures from my trip to Costa Rica, I attempted the Chinese writing. The facilitator for this event said that Chinese characters are each distinct words and that new words are created by combining the basic characters. He encouraged us to create our own. My student had a blast; as she combined things like horse + hair = hair weave. I came up with the word to the right which when I created it I was thinking it meant passion. I later realized that it could also be translated as heartburn as it literally translates to heart fire. This event happened earlier in the year but I was reminded of it when I found this image on my computer.
