Othello

I was able to check out the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s production of Othello. Avery Brooks’ portrayal of Othello was regal and convincing. He was the fool in love. Watching him with Colleen Delany, I wished I was Desdemona (until the end of course). Even though I knew what was going to happen in the play, Patrick Page’s Iago was so convincing that you actually hated him for his treachery. The audience actually gasped when he slit poor Roderigo’s throat. This is what theatre should be.
Some other observations: 1) I have to admit that at one point during Othello’s mental breakdown and fits I imagined an alien coming out of Brooks’ chest even though Deep Space Nine didn’t have those types of aliens. 2) It was hard to see David Sabin in the serious role of Brabantio as most of his other roles are pretty much the comic relief (i.e. Nick Bottom in Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lord Augustus Lorton in Lady Windermere’s Fan, Paolo in Lorenzaccio, and Sir Anthony Absolute in The Rivals). I guess I have typecast him in my mind.
